How Many More Swim Days Does A Pool Heater Actually Buy You?
Most heater marketing talks in degrees. Degrees per hour, degrees of rise, how fast it gets to 84.
That's the wrong unit. Nobody buys a heater because they want warmer water in the abstract. They buy one because they want more days in the pool, and the honest way to evaluate the purchase is to ask how many days it actually adds.
So here's that math, including the part most articles leave out: the added days at the edges of the season are the most expensive ones, and there's a much cheaper way to buy them than the way most owners do.
First, what counts as swimmable
Roughly:

Most families settle somewhere around 82 to 84. For the numbers below we've used 78°F as the line between "the pool is open" and "nobody is going in."
Your unheated season is shorter than you think
An unheated above ground pool tracks fairly close to the average outdoor air temperature, with some solar gain on sunny days.
One genuine advantage worth knowing: above ground pools warm up faster in spring than inground pools do. They hold less water, they're shallower, and they sit up in the air and sunlight rather than in cool ground. Your pool is ahead of the inground down the street in May, and behind it in October when that thermal mass works the other way.
Even so, in a Midwest or Northeast climate the unheated reality looks like this. May water sits in the mid-60s, which is too cold for most people. Late June is when it reliably crosses 78. July and August are comfortable. By mid-September it's dropping back through the low 70s and the season is effectively over.
That's roughly eleven usable weeks, and it usually feels shorter because a cool spell in July takes days back out of it.
What a heater changes
Here is the first useful finding, and it surprises people.
Capacity is not the constraint. A 266,000 BTU heater on an 18' round pool can comfortably hold 84°F in April, when air averages 50°F. The heat loss at that temperature difference is around 47,000 BTU per hour uncovered, against roughly 218,000 BTU per hour of delivered output. The heater is not close to struggling.
So the limit on your season is not the equipment. It's two things: what you're willing to spend, and whether it's pleasant to get out of the pool into the air. Water at 84°F with air at 50°F is a short swim for most people.
Realistically, a heater in a cold climate moves you from a late-June-to-early-September season to a May-to-early-October one.
The numbers by climate

The pattern is worth reading carefully. The number of weeks added is broadly similar across climates, at around eleven. What changes is what that's a multiple of. In Minnesota you're doubling a short season. In Texas you're adding to an already long one.
Which means the colder your climate, the more a heater changes your ownership experience, even though the running cost is higher. That's the opposite of what most people assume.
The catch nobody mentions
Here's the honest part.
The days you add are the most expensive days of the year to heat. Heat loss is driven by the gap between your water and the air, so the further the air is from your target, the more it costs to hold that target.
For an 18' round pool held at 84°F, with natural gas at $1.50 per therm:

So the peak-summer months are cheap and the shoulder months are three times the price. Anyone telling you a heater simply extends your season without mentioning that is selling, not explaining.
But those numbers assume you hold the pool at 84°F around the clock for the entire month. In April, that is almost certainly not what you want to do.
The move: heat on demand, don't hold temperature
This is the part that changes the economics completely, and it's specific to gas.
In peak summer, holding a temperature makes sense. The pool is in use constantly, the cost is modest, and you want it ready.
In April and October, you are not swimming every day. You're swimming on the one weekend the weather cooperates. So don't pay to hold 84°F for thirty days to use it on two of them. Warm it up on Friday and let it go on Monday.
Gas is the right tool for this because it heats fast. That's the whole advantage of gas over a heat pump, and the shoulder season is where the advantage actually pays off.
What that costs, same pool, same fuel price:

Compare that to holding temperature all April at $625, and you're looking at roughly a thirteenth of the cost for the swimming you were actually going to do.
Nobody tells you this because "extend your season" sounds better as a slogan than "heat it Friday and turn it off Monday." But the second one is how a gas heater earns its money in the shoulder months. You can run the numbers for your own pool and rates in our heater cost calculator.
Cost per added swim day
Put together: about eleven added weekends across the shoulder seasons, at an average of roughly $37 each, comes to somewhere near $400 for the season, buying you around 22 additional swim days.
That works out to roughly $18 a day for your whole household to swim.
For context, a single day at a water park costs more than that per person. That framing is not a sales pitch, it's just the closest honest comparison, and it's the number that makes the purchase make sense or not for your family.
Run yours before you buy. Your climate, your fuel rate and your pool size all move it.
The multiplier on all of this
You'll notice the covered column in every table above is roughly a third of the uncovered one.
A solar cover is not an accessory to a heater. In the shoulder season it is close to a precondition. April at $625 uncovered is a hard sell. April at $225 is a decision. And in the weekend-heating scenario, the cover is what keeps Friday's heat in the pool through Sunday.

Who this doesn't pay off for
We'd rather you skip the heater than regret it. It probably isn't worth it if:
You only swim in July and August anyway. Your pool is already comfortable then. You'd be spending real money to make an 82°F pool into an 84°F pool.
Your pool gets full afternoon sun and you're in a warm climate. Between solar gain and a cover, you may already have most of the season available to you.
Nobody in the house is temperature-sensitive. Heaters get bought most often by families with small children, by people who swim for exercise and want consistency, and by households where one person finds 78°F too cold. If nobody is in those groups, the case is weaker.
You'd be running propane at a high delivered price. Work through the cost math on your actual rate before committing. The weekend numbers above are natural gas, and propane changes them.
Try a solar cover for one season first. It's a fraction of the cost and it will add several degrees on its own. If that gets you where you want to be, you've saved yourself a heater. If it doesn't, you now know exactly how big the gap is, and you'll size the heater better for having lived it.
