What is a pool liner floor pad? Do I need one?

You’ve prepared the area for your new above ground pool – you’ve got a 3” sand base all leveled and packed inside the pool frame and you’re ready to put in your pool liner – or so you think.

Ideally, before you put in the liner for your pool, it’s highly recommended your put in a pool liner floor pad, pool cove, and wall foam. (see our other articles for more info on pool cove and wall foam)

A pool liner floor pad is installed on the ground on top of the sand base during pool assembly and protects liners from rocks, roots, and grass that may come up into your pool liner. The pool liner floor pad is made of polypropylene geotextile (felt) that is super tough but is also thick and provides excellent cushioning for your feet. The sand base for your pool will settle and get packed under the weight of the pool water. It will become hard like concrete, so floor pad offers a cushion between hard sand and the pool liner and can protect from swimmer footprints developing in the liner.

Pool liner floor pads range in price depending on the pool size but are fairly affordable. Even better, they often last the life of the pool, so they are not something regularly needing to be replaced. They are also easy to install so it’s easy to see why most people choose to use them.

For the best liner protection and comfort, a pool liner floor pad is a way to go.
