  • Rust and Your Steel Wall Pool: How to Prevent It, Catch It Early, and Fix It

    If you've been shopping for an above ground pool, you've probably read that steel walls are the most popular and most cost-effective choice out there. That's true, and it's why steel has been the backbone of this industry since the 1940s.

    But there's a second half to that sentence that a lot of retailers skip: steel walls rust. Not all of them, and not quickly, and almost never for the reason first-time owners expect. Rust is far and away the most common reason a hard-sided above ground pool comes down years earlier than it should — not liner failure, not pump failure, not storm damage.

    The good news is that pool wall corrosion is one of the most preventable problems in pool ownership. It is slow, it is visible if you know where to look, and the things that cause it are almost all things you control. This guide walks you through the whole picture: why it happens, where it starts, how to inspect for it, and how to tell the difference between a Saturday afternoon fix and a pool that's telling you it's done.

    First, what your pool wall actually is

    The wall of a steel above ground pool is a single long sheet of steel, rolled into a circle or oval and bolted at the seam. It's corrugated — those vertical ripples aren't decorative, they're what give a thin sheet of metal enough rigidity to hold back tons of water.

    That steel is hot-dipped galvanized, which means it's been coated in zinc. Zinc does two jobs. It physically seals the steel from air and moisture, and it corrodes preferentially, meaning the zinc gives itself up before the steel underneath does. A galvanized wall isn't rust-proof. It's rust-delayed, and the delay is measured in many years as long as the coating stays intact and the wall stays dry on the outside.

    Rust starts when something breaks that arrangement — a scratch, a drilled hole, constant moisture, or a chemical environment that eats the zinc faster than it was designed for.

    Which rust matters and which doesn't

    This is the single most useful thing a new owner can understand, and it will save you a lot of unnecessary panic.

    The wall holds the water. The frame mostly holds the shape.

    Your top rails, top caps, uprights, connector plates and stabilizer bars form a frame that keeps the pool round, supports the top edge, and gives the whole thing its structure above the waterline. It's important, but it is not what's resisting the outward pressure of thousands of gallons. That's the wall.

    So when you find flecks of rust in your pool water and trace them to a stabilizer bar under the top rail, that's a maintenance item. Annoying, worth addressing, not urgent. When you find bubbling paint and soft metal in the bottom six inches of the wall itself, that's a different conversation, and it deserves your attention that week.

    The four places rust starts

    In our experience, nearly every case of serious wall corrosion begins in one of these four spots. Learn them and you'll know exactly where to look.

    1. Around the skimmer and return openings

    This is the most common and the most serious. Both of these are holes cut in your pool wall, and the cut edges expose bare steel that the galvanizing never covered. As long as the gaskets and faceplate are sealed, that's fine. When a gasket goes brittle or a faceplate screw backs off, water seeps out and sits behind the fitting, in the dark, against raw steel, for months.

    By the time you see a rust stain running down the outside of the wall beneath your skimmer, it's usually been leaking for a while. This is why some manufacturers now build the skimmer and return into a separate stainless steel service panel — it removes the most vulnerable spot on the pool from the equation entirely.

    2. The bottom several inches of the wall

    The wall sits in a bottom track that rests on your base. That means the very bottom of the wall lives in the one place moisture collects: splash-out from swimmers, rain runoff, sprinkler spray, dew, and anything that gets banked up against the pool.

    Mulch, topsoil, grass clippings and landscape fabric piled against the wall are the biggest offenders we see. They hold water against bare metal permanently. So does a yard that slopes toward the pool instead of away from it.

    3. Under the top rails

    Lift a top rail and you'll find connector plates and stabilizer bars. Water gets in there from rain and condensation, and doesn't dry out quickly. This is where those little rust flakes floating in your pool usually come from.

    4. The wall seam and any fastener line

    Bolt holes are drilled holes, which means exposed edges again. The seam where the wall closes on itself is worth a look every year, especially the bottom of that seam.

    How to prevent it

    Most rust prevention happens outside the pool, not in it.

    Keep the base perimeter clear and draining. Nothing organic and nothing damp against the wall — no mulch beds touching the pool, no piled grass clippings, no soil banked up. A band of pea gravel or pavers around the base is one of the cheapest, highest-return things you can do for a steel pool. It gives splash-out somewhere to go and keeps wet material off the metal.     Aim sprinklers away. Daily irrigation hitting a steel wall does real damage over a few seasons.

    Fix leaks the week you find them, not the season after. A weeping skimmer gasket is a five-dollar part and an hour of work. Ignored for two summers, it's the reason the pool comes down.

    Keep your pH where it belongs. Water that drifts acidic is corrosive to every piece of metal it touches, including the wall behind the liner if there's ever a breach. Balanced water isn't just about comfort and clarity. Our water testing guide walks through the routine.

    Never store or stage chemicals next to the pool. Chlorine tablets and shock give off corrosive fumes. A bucket of tabs sitting on the deck beside your top rail all summer will visibly attack the metal near it. Store them in a dry, ventilated place away from the pool and away from your equipment pad.

    Don't let anything rub the wall. Winter cover cables and winches, ladder feet, hoses, string trimmers. Every scratch is a place the zinc coating is gone.

    Be careful with salt. A salt chlorine generator changes the corrosion math on a steel wall pool considerably. That subject deserves its own article, and we've written one — read it before you add a single bag.

    Your two inspection windows

    Twice a year, ten minutes each time.

    At closing, before the cover goes on, walk the whole outside of the pool. Look at the bottom of the wall all the way around. Look under the skimmer and return. Then lift two or three top rails at different points and look at the connector plates and stabilizer bars.

    At opening, do it again, and pay attention to what changed over winter.

    There's a third, better opportunity that only comes around every several years: when you replace your liner. With the liner out you can see the entire inside face of the wall, which is the only time you ever will. Plenty of owners discover the true condition of their pool at exactly that moment. Take photos. If the inside looks clean, you've just bought yourself a lot of confidence about the next decade.

    Reading what you find

    Repairing minor rust

    If you've caught it early and the metal is still solid, this is a manageable DIY job. It's done from the outside, with the water level lowered below the work area if you're anywhere near the waterline.

    1. Wire brush the area back to clean, sound metal. Brushing tells you the truth — if the brush goes through, it wasn't surface rust.
    2. Feather the edges so you're not leaving a hard lip.
    3. Apply a self-etching primer rated for galvanized metal.
    4. Top-coat with a rust-inhibiting exterior enamel.
    5. Seal any seam or fastener in the area with an exterior-grade silicone so water can't get back behind your work.

    A small perforation higher up the wall can sometimes be patched with a sheet metal plate riveted from the inside, bedded in silicone, with the edges taped so nothing can cut the liner. That's a real repair with a real service life, and it's a common one.

    When a repair is the wrong answer

    Here's the part most retailers won't put in writing.

    Patching gets much harder, and much less advisable, the lower on the wall you go. The pressure is greatest at the bottom. An 18' round pool with a 52" wall holds roughly 7,600 gallons — about 30 tons of water — and every bit of that load is concentrated at the base of the wall. A patch near the bottom track is being asked to do a job the original steel is failing at.

    Consider replacement rather than repair when you see:

    • Rust that has perforated the wall in the bottom foot
    • Multiple rusted-through spots rather than one
    • Rust that keeps coming back in the same place after you've treated it
    • Any bulging, flexing, or loss of round
    • Widespread corrosion visible on the inside of the wall during a liner change

    A wall failure isn't a slow leak. It's sudden, and thousands of gallons leave in seconds. If you're standing there weighing a patch against a new pool, and you find yourself talking yourself into the patch, that's usually your answer.

    If it is time, you don't necessarily need to replace everything. Sometimes the frame, filter system and ladder are fine and it's the wall that's done.     The short version

    • Galvanized steel walls are rust-delayed, not rust-proof, and the delay depends almost entirely on how you treat them.
    • The wall is structural. The frame mostly isn't. Rust on the two is not the same problem.
    • Watch four places: skimmer and return openings, the bottom of the wall, under the top rails, and the seam.
    • Keep the base clear and draining, fix leaks fast, keep chemicals away from the metal, and keep your water balanced.
    • Inspect at opening and closing, and take a good look at the inside of the wall whenever the liner comes out.
    • Small and high up is usually repairable. Perforated and low is usually not.

    Rust is the failure mode of the steel above ground pool, but it's a slow one, and it announces itself long before it becomes dangerous. Owners who look twice a year rarely get surprised.
